How To Correctly Use A Glucometer
A glucometer is a device used for monitoring blood sugar level which can be done while at home and is capable of providing instantaneous feedback and straight away informing you of your blood sugar level. This information is very valuable for sufferers of diabetes, as it allows them to know if their blood sugar level is too high, low, or if it is an acceptable range as determined by your health care professional. It is also important to keep a note of the results of the glucometer’s findings as this will give your doctor a much clearer picture of whether the current treatment you are receiving for your diabetes is successful or not. A glucometer is very small and can thus be taken out and about with you as well, thus meaning you can test your blood sugar level almost anywhere if you are either scheduled to or are feeling concerned for some reason.
Using a glucometer is not difficult, and should take no longer than ten to fifteen minutes at the absolute most. In order to correctly use a glucometer, you should first set out it, a test strip, an alcohol prep pad and a lancet. Then wash your hands (this is a very important step in order to prevent infection). Make a decision as to where you intend to take a blood sample from – the tip of a finger is the usual choice, although some of the more up to date models allow you to use either a forearm or just some other area of the body which you may find less sensitive. It can sometimes be a help to warm your hands prior to the test in order to make the blood flow better. Running your hands under warm water or even just simply rubbing them together in a brisk fashion should be sufficient to do the job. Then you can finally turn on the glucometer and put in a test strip when it is ready for you to do so. Make sure that your hands are perfectly dry and wipe the selected area of your body with an alcohol prep pad. When the alcohol has evaporated, place your finger on the soft pad and take a drop of blood. Place that drop either at the side of or actually on the test strip. The glucometer will then quickly determine your blood sugar level.
