Once it is inserted into the bladder, Bard catheters use thin and flexible tubing that exits the body and attaches to a urine bag.  It is essential that the bag be kept at a level higher than the bladder.  This prevents the urine from flowing backwards into the urinary tract and bladder.  When this occurs it can cause an infection.

An infection is most common among those who use catheters.  Bard catheters are designed to reduce infection as much as possible.  When choosing a bag, it is helpful to use a disposable bag rather than a reusable one.  Change the bag often to reduce the risk of bacteria accumulating in it.  Another thing that can reduce the risk of infection is a special valve.  The valve stops urine from flowing back into the urinary tract.  You can choose large bags for nighttime use and smaller bags for daytime use.

The leg bag is a helpful addition to Bard catheters.  A leg bag can attach to the leg using tape or Velcro strips.  This helps to keep the bag at a level lower than the bladder and at the same time helps to keep the bag discreetly hidden from view.
