Understanding the Details about Your Glucometer

If you are suffering from diabetes or hypoglycemia then no doubt you are already familiar with the glucometer.  It is important to stay on top of your glucose levels so you can avoid negative side effects today as well as long-term problems down the road.  If you’ve had your meter for a very long time, it may be time to see what is new on the market and how it can make your life easier.

How long does your meter take to give results?  Do endless minutes tick by, or worse, can you watch an entire sitcom before your meter will give results?  It is time to trade up that old relic for a faster more efficient machine!  Meters today can give you results in as fast as five seconds!

Is your glucometer nearly the size of your toaster?  Perhaps that is an exaggeration, but it certainly can feel that big and bulky when you try to haul it around with you.  Some models today can fit in the palm of your hand, or be even smaller!  This makes transporting them easy if they can fit in a purse or even a pocket.  This is a big convenience when you have to test your blood several times a day and still need to be on the go.

How about codes?  Accidently entering in the wrong code can be disastrous, as your readings can be inaccurate; this would mean you tested for nothing!  If you are tired of coding then it is time to get a newer meter that doesn’t require coding at all.  Some meters now have the information built into the test strips so that you don’t have to do a thing.

Lancing…everyone’s least favorite part of the meter!  Older models usually require a much bigger sample to get an accurate reading.  This usually means a larger lancet and a bigger poke.  It is time to trade up to a newer glucometer that needs a much smaller blood sample to work.  Some newer meters even allow you to test on less sensitive parts of the body.  No more finger pokes!  You can instead test on places like the forearm or thigh.  If you are also tired of squinting to see your display, then you’ll be happy to know new models often have very large display screens, some even using large text for those with bad vision.
